An adoption home study is an in-depth psychosocial assessment of your family and home environment. This assessment is used to determine if you are appropriate and prepared to adopt a child. Information contained in an adoption home study includes your birth/childhood history, marital history, education and employment history, health history, mental health history, criminal history, history of violence or abuse, substance abuse history, and much more. A description of your financial information as well as your home and community are also included in an adoption home study.
Who conducts my adoption home study?
An adoption home study should be completed by a Licensed Social Worker that has experience completing adoption home studies. Licensed Social Workers can be found through adoption agencies or independent private contractors. Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC has two Licensed Clinical Social Workers who have 23 years of combined social work experience.
How long is the adoption home study process?
Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC providers, Sara Donnelly and Brooke Nelson, pride themselves in completing comprehensive, quality adoption home studies in a timely manner. On average, a domestic adoption home study is expected to be completed 6-8 weeks from the initial home visit.
How much should I expect to spend on an adoption home study?

Our home studies cost $1,100; this price includes a completed adoption home study, time and travel, and other administrative costs. Where are your social workers licensed?
Our social workers are licensed in both Kansas and Missouri. Kansas licensure is provided by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board and Missouri licensure is provided by the Missouri Division of Professional Registration, Committee for Social Workers.
Does Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC provide adoption home studies for single parent families?
Yes, we provide home studies for all types of families including single parent families, two parent families, blended families, kinship arrangements, same-sex couples, and more.
How many home visits are included in an adoption home study?
State regulations require that a Licensed Social Worker conduct a minimum of 2 face to face visits with prospective adoptive parents. Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC providers will conduct a minimum of 2 home visits to complete the adoption home study process. These home visits will be scheduled at a convenient time for all parties.
What is the social worker evaluating during the home visits?
The social worker will be evaluating if your home is safe, clean, and appropriate for an adoptive child. In addition, adequate space, access to healthcare and educational services, as well as home safety precautions will be explored. If the social worker finds a condition in your home that is not acceptable, guidance will be provided to ensure the issue is addressed before the home study is completed.
What kind of background checks are required for an adoption home study?
State regulations require both a criminal and a child abuse background check for domestic adoption home studies. In Missouri, criminal background checks must include fingerprints. Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC will assist you with the process to complete background checks for your adoption home study.
What is my responsibility during the adoption home study process?
During the adoption home study process, we request complete honesty and openness to ensure we gather an accurate assessment of your family and home. Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC providers also request that you provide and complete several documents during the home study process including: birth certificates for all household members, marriage certificates, divorce decrees and child custody documents if applicable, copies of driver’s licenses, copy of health insurance cards, financial statement including a bank statement and recent tax return, a physician statement confirming good health, an employment verification letter, and 4 letters of recommendation.
How long is an adoption home study valid?
An adoption home study is valid for 1 year from the date of completion. An adoption home study update can be completed by Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC to ensure your home study is in good standing following the 1 year anniversary.
I have a valid adoption home study, now what?
Once you have an adoption home study you can begin working with a child placing agency to identify an adoptive child (ren). Kansas City Adoption Home Studies, LLC does not provide child placement services but we are more than willing to refer you to an adoption agency that can assist with this need. You will also need an adoption attorney to assist you in finalizing an adoption once you have an identified child. We can provide you with a list of adoption attorneys as well if needed.
